Become a Medical Interpreter

Medical Interpreters assist patients during clinical outreaches by facilitating patient-provider dialogue and ensuring patient comfort. APHF is actively recruiting Medical Interpreters who possess proficient fluency in the following languages: Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and Vietnamese. This is a great opportunity to become more involved in our organization, and we highly encourage you to apply if you are fluent in any of these languages. If selected, you will be able to improve APHF's ability to serve San Diego County’s diverse communities, as well as allow us to extend our free screeenings and health education to hard-to-reach populations!

To become a Medical Interpreter for APHF, you will need to pass our Medical Interpreter Exam, which is conducted through a video conference call with one of our Examiners. During the exam, you will help a patient (simulated by the Test Examiner) navigate through a mock registration and consultation process, similar to the ones we conduct at outreaches.

We are also open to providing Medical Interpreter exams in other languages. If you are fluent in another language and would like to act as an examiner, please reach out to us by emailing volunteer@aphfsd.org for more information.

Fulfillment of 1-year term with APHF
Completion of training on venue setup, data collection and processing, healthcare equipment operation and troubleshooting, and patient care
Professional and respectful conduct as a representative of APHF.
Business casual attire and closed-toe shoes for outreach events
Assistance with transportation to outreaches

The Medical Interpreter Exam opens for approximately 1 month following each Core Program application cycle. Once Core volunteers complete Core Program onboarding, APHF will send emails regarding registration for the Medical Interpreter Exam. Volunteers will complete the registration form and choose their top 3 dates to take the exam. An APHF Medical Interpreter Examiner will contact the volunteer to organize an exam date and send the necessary study materials. Exams are conducted virtually and usually last 1 hour. The results will be relayed during the exam session or soon after within the same day. Volunteers who pass the Medical Interpreter Exam are then able to assist with communications at outreaches.

Status as an APHF Medical Interpreter does not expire.

To receive the link to External Medical Interpreter application link:

Email volunteer@aphfsd.org with your full name, affiliated organization (if applicable), and requested medical interpreter exam language. Use the email subject line "Interest in External Medical Interpreter Application - [First name & Last name]".

Upon submission of the application link and closure of the application window, APHF Program Interns will contact applicants with a link to the Exam Booking Page through Google Calendar for applicants to register for an interpreter exam in their desired language. A confirmation email will be sent with the Google Meets link for the chosen exam date and time. Exams will be conducted virtually and usually last 1 hour. The results will be relayed during the exam session or soon after within the same day.

Accepted External Medical Interpreters will be required to complete an APHF expedited eLearning orientation before they are able to assist with outreaches.The eLearning orientation will prepare External Medical Interpreters to participate in outreaches, providing information about APHF, the diseases we screen for, and our outreach stations. A one-time membership fee of $10 is required. All membership fees go towards funding equipment and supplies in support of hosting free outreach events. Once onboarding is completed, External Medical Interpreters can register for and join APHF outreaches.
