Graduate Volunteer Program

This program is open to graduate students only.

What to Expect as an APHF Team Member

  • Volunteers are expected to fulfill a 1-year term with APHF. If you have applied once, you will not need to reapply unless you are determined inactive by the Executive Board. Outreaches are not based on a routine schedule, but rather dependent on the number of venues scheduled. On average, there are approximately two outreaches per month that volunteers may register for. Registration emails are sent every month 2 weeks in advance of the first outreaches for the upcoming month to allow volunteers enough time to arrange their schedule.
  • For each outreach, Program Managers will select from the pool of volunteers who have submitted a registration request and will notify them 1 week in advance. Once selected, attendance at the outreach is mandatory unless there is a valid reason.
  • Selected volunteers will be assigned to a station on the day of the outreach (please see below for further details).
  • Act professionally and respectfully as a representative of APHF.
  • Attend outreaches in business casual attire, white coat, name badge, and closed-toe shoes.

What to Expect from Us

  • Opportunity to serve minorities and at-risk populations as well as expand cultural understanding.
  • Provide professional health students another source of experiential learning. UCSD pharmacy students can earn IPPE service-learning credits at APHF outreaches.
  • Develop patient care, leadership, communication, teaching, project management, research, and data analysis skills.
  • Professionalism and Integrity.
  • Mentorship and access to a network of healthcare professionals.
  • Volunteers will be thoroughly trained before operating healthcare equipment, directing patient care, providing education/consultation , and collecting data.
  • Transportation to outreaches will be provided on request – each Selection Email will include a list of volunteers or Program Manager providing carpool. It is the volunteer’s responsibility to acquire transportation.
  • Program Managers will generally respond to emails within 48 hours. If you do not hear back, please follow-up with an email.

Become a Volunteer

During each rotation cycle, APHF receives a number of exceptional applicants. The volunteer cohort for Asian Pacific Health Foundation has become increasingly diverse while maintaining the professionalism, integrity, and scale required to personally serve our local community.

As a volunteer with Asian Pacific Health Foundation, you will interpret test results, perform data analysis, and provide education/consultation to patients under the supervision of a preceptor. In addition, you will be a part of the linkage-to-care committee, in which you will be thoroughly trained to follow-up with patients who received positive hepatitis test results or fulfill criteria for metabolic syndrome and guide patients through health systems for treatment. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to assist with research projects and fundraising for APHF community health screenings.

The commitment term for our organization is at least one year. While we do not expect your attendance at every event, we do expect you to show interest in attending the majority of them.

If you have any conflicts during your application or volunteer term, you should immediately report to a Program Manager and it will be logged for our records.

The Volunteer Cycle

The following cycle serves as a general outline starting from when a volunteer is onboarded with our team until their contract ends.

1. Application is submitted by the volunteer for review by Program Managers.

2. Program Managers will notify volunteers that application has been received and under review after the application deadline.

3. Program Managers will notify volunteers whether they are accepted and provide orientation details.

4. Volunteers must attend the orientation and submit all required forms in order to participate in outreaches.

5. Registration Email will be sent out for volunteers to sign up to outreaches.

6. Selection Email will notify which volunteers have been selected for the outreach. If you are unable to attend, you are responsible for finding a replacement. Please review the Policies and Guidelines for more details.

7. Volunteers will review the Station Manual for their assigned station and come prepared to the outreach.

    Failure to complete these requirements will result in immediate withdrawal of your application.

Current Stations

Research, Grants, and Data Analysis - You will be managing data presentation on the website to provide an overview of our results, disease prevalence, and outreach efforts in San Diego. As a member of this team, you will be assisting with grant discovery and submissions. In addition, you will learn how to conduct statistical analysis for our research and have the potential to present these findings at local and national symposiums. As part of this team, you will also assist with the pre/post-assessment station to collect data on our educational services. 

Education/Consultation - This station is for professional health students only (M.D. & Pharm.D.) Professional health students will not only assess patients’ knowledge of metabolic syndrome, viral hepatitis, and osteoporosis, but also educate patients on the main concepts, symptoms, and risk factors for these diseases. In addition, professional health students will provide consultation on patient test results under the supervision of a preceptor. Patients will be consulted on their results pertaining to metabolic syndrome, blood pressure, blood lipids, diabetes, bone health, HBV, and HCV. Furthermore, professional health students will provide linkage-to-care for medical conditions that patients may have as well as refer patients who do not have access to healthcare to a provider.

Linkage-to-care - Volunteers will have the opportunity to become a patient navigator in the linkage-to-care team, in which you will be thoroughly trained to follow-up with patients who received positive test results and guide patients through health systems for treatment. Patient navigators will be responsible for connecting the patient with a doctor and will serve as the point-of-contact for patients. In addition, patient navigators will provide patients with resource pamphlets containing information regarding affordable medication options.
